On behalf of several non-partisan organizations, including the NAACP Camden County Branch; Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Rho Mu Lambda Chapter; Camden County Retired Educators Association; Fair Count; Blacks in Government (BIG) Kings Bay Chapter; and The Links, Inc., Brunswick, GA Chapter, we would like to take this opportunity to remind you that it is extremely important that every eligible citizen vote in the upcoming election.

We encourage you to take advantage of advance in-person voting, and especially want to call your attention to the fact that Camden County will have advance in-person voting on Sunday, October 20, from 1 pm to 5 pm. We ask that you join in a coordinated Camden County 2024 “Souls to the Polls” Campaign so that the registered voters in your congregation and church community may have safe and secure transportation to the Camden County Annex Building. We want to ensure that we show up in an orderly fashion and that we do not violate any of the Georgia election laws. Please identify a member of your congregation as a point of contact as we solidify the details for the 2024 “Souls to the Polls” Campaign.

The Black Church has continually been involved in the fight to expand and protect voting rights since the years following the Civil War. Prior to the 1965 Voting Rights Act, churches and civil rights organizations sponsored the “Prayer Pilgrimage of Freedom” in May 1957 in Washington, D.C. when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his “Give Us the Ballot” speech. Inthe 1970s and 1980s, Black political action committees or PACs, such as the Fannie Lou Hamer Political Action Committee, were established as church-based PACs, to advocate on behalf of “the poor and powerless during electoral campaigns.” In the 1990s, the “Souls to the Polls” movement began in Florida to get Black churchgoers to early voting locations. Thirty years later, we continue to honor the movement with the 2024 “Souls to the Polls” Campaign.

As non-partisan organizations, we do not endorse any candidate in any electoral race. We do, however, strongly encourage you to research the candidates and vote for the candidate in each race down the entire ballot whose views are most closely aligned with your own. You may get a sample ballot by going to the Georgia My Voter Page found at https://mvp.sos.ga.gov/s/

Thank you for your time and attention. We look forward to working with you throughout this election cycle. Please submit the information for your congregation's point of contact to Mr. Vernon Higgins, Chair, Political Action Committee, NAACP Unit 5177, via email at naacp5177@gmail.com.
